Ed Young introduces the reader to the story of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor challenges all the animals to a race. “The first twelve animals to cross the finish line would have a year in the Chinese calendar named after them.” Cat and Rat are best friends but the temptation to win the race is too much for Rat. He tricks Cat causing it to finish the race in thirteenth place. “And that is why, to this very day, Cat and Rat are enemies'” The book includes animal character trait description and a Chinese Zodiac calendar.
