Translated from Danish, Cry, Heart, But Never Break by Glenn Ringtved is a poignant picture book about death, grief, acceptance and wellbeing.

Death arrives to claim the gravely ill grandmother of four siblings. “Not wishing to frighten the children, the visitor had left his scythe outside the door.” While Death waits the children hope he will leave without their beloved grandmother.

They delay Death by refilling his coffee and he tells a story helping them understand how life and death are inexorably linked. “What would life be worth if there were no death? Who would enjoy the sun if it never rained? Who would yearn for day if there were no night?” When the unavoidable happens Death enters the grandmother’s room telling the children “Cry, Heart, But Never Break.”
