Hortense hates her shadow. “Everywhere she went, it went. Everything she did, it did.” She tries everything to escape from her shadow by hiding it behind columns, under the sofa and in the garden pond. She manages to escape her shadow by slamming the window to cut it off. “The shadow howled and kicked and scratched the glass”, but Hortense feels free. When bandits show up at Hortense’s home the shadow returns to scare the villains away. It is then Hortense reflects on the shadows actions and realises it is indispensable to who she is. “You’re part of me, shadow. Please come back!” This fable ends with Hortense and her shadow reunited.
