12 Amazing Kids Crafts for Chinese New Years

Chinese New Year is just around the corner. People all over the world celebrate the Lunar New Year, which runs for 15 days. Customs include cleaning the home to sweep out bad fortune and allow good fortune to enter. Children also receive money in special red envelopes, which you can read about in the book Sam and the Lucky Money.

I lived in Malaysia for three years and always looked forward to the Chinese New Year celebrations. In January, temples, malls and local areas turned into a sea of red and gold. Every year we visited the huge Thean Hou Temple, in Kuala Lumpur. During the 15 day festivities, the temple holds a lion dance which you can see in the video below. Children and adults give the lion money and gifts and the lion throws oranges back into the crowd, a symbol of good luck.

Keep scrolling down for a great selection of craft activities related to Chinese New Year and Chinese culture. Happy New Year! Gung Hay Fat Choy!
