Lenny & Lucy by Philip C. Stead is a lovely picture book about friendship, anxiety, and open-mindedness.

Peter and his father move to a new house in a dark, unfriendly wood, which scares Peter. Though Peter has his dog Harold for protection. He makes an imaginary protector, Lenny, from a tall pile of pillows, blankets and string. Worried that Lenny, the Guardian of the Bridge, is lonely he makes a companion.

“When he was done he named her Lucy. And Lucy was a good friend to Lenny.” Lenny and Lucy, along with Harold, help Peter feel safer, and he ventures outside where he meets his next-door neighbour, Millie, and discovers that his new home is not as dangerous as imagined.
