Little Red by Bethan Woollvin promotes female lead characters, independence and courage.
This version of Little Red Riding Hood shows the main character as an observant tough cookie. Just as in the original story, Little Red comes across a wolf. “Which might have scared some little girls. But not this little girl.” Straight away we get the picture that the girl in this version is savvier than the original.
She continues on her journey to Grandma’s house. Readers see the wolf rush to the house first and eat Grandma. Before entering, Little Red looks through the window to see “a badly disguised wolf waiting in Grandma’s bed!” Rather than a huntsman coming to her rescue this independent character wheels the axe to save herself.
