What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness helps children (and adults) reduce anxiety, improve resilience and cope during challenging situations. Overtime, children will increase their self-awareness, social awareness and self-confidence.
Mindfulness is a great way for children, especially those who experience anxiety, to improve their self-management, patience and happiness. Many people think mindfulness is about clearing your mind, but it is being aware of what is happening in the present moment. It helps children slow down and focus on the right now rather than thinking about the past or future.
It takes practice, but there are many benefits to mindfulness for children:
- Improved focus and awareness
- Calmness, patience and improved impulse control
- Improved sleep and general health
- Decreased stress and anxiety
- Increased happiness, empathy and kindness
The University of California Berkely has information and research into the benefits of mindfulness. Take a look at their definition of Mindfulness in their magazine Greater Good. You can also find a round-up of mindfulness research in the document Evidence for the Impact of Mindfulness on Children and Young People.
Mindfulness takes practice but it is well worth it. Practising every day is the best way for it to become a habit and give children ways to cope when they are feeling stressed, anxious or have a lack of focus. Mindful practice will help your students calm down and feel happier if they are angry, frustrated or unhappy.
