Title: One Word from Sophia
Author: Jim Averbeck
Illustrator: Yasmeen Ismail
Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers (2015)
One Word from Sophia by Jim Averbeck is all about the power of manners and the word ‘please’.
Sophia’s One True Desire is a pet giraffe. With her birthday coming up she tries to persuade each member of her family to give her a giraffe. She presents a tailored speech her mother, a judge, her businessman father and Grand-mamá, who is the strictest member of the family. In turn, they tell her she is too ‘effusive’, “verbose’ and ‘loquacious.” Basically, she is just too wordy.
Reflecting after each of her presentations she tones down her language until she tells her Grand-mamá, ‘please’. Her adaptability and manners mean her one true desire comes true and she gets her wish of a pet giraffe.
