Nobel Laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai, started a movement in Africa to prevent deforestation. She encouraged African women to plant trees leading to thriving farms and communities. She then gave seedling to men, school children and even soldiers. “You hold your gun,” she tells the soldiers, “but what are you protecting? The whole country is disappearing… You should hold the gun in your right hand and a tree seedling in your left.”
