The Pond by Nicola Davies reinforces the themes of acceptance, bereavement, family and nature
The narrator of the story, a young boy, describes the loss of his father and how different family members experience their grief in different ways. They try to cope with their bereavement by rebuilding the pond he created when he was alive.
The pond that was “the muddy, messy hole that filled our hearts” now becomes somewhere plants, insects, tadpoles and dragonflies come to life. The story ends with the family leaving the house and the pond for pastures new.
