Princess Smartypants by Babette Cole is a funny picture book that reinforces the themes of independence, gender roles and problem-solving.

“Princess Smartypants did not want to get married. She enjoyed being a Ms.” She was inundated with marriage offers from princes because of her looks and wealth. Her parents demand she finds a husband, so she sets the suitors a task to “win her hand.” This included removing (giant) slugs from her garden, feeding her (fierce) pets and a (hair-raising) motorbike ride.

The delighted princess watched as none of the princes completed the tasks. Thinking she was safe, Prince Swashbuckle showed up and completed all the tasks perfectly. Princess Smartypants kissed his cheek turning him into a toad. After news of Prince Swashbuckle spread she was never bothered again, and she “lived happily ever after.”
