A retelling of how the Chinese Zodiac and its animals came about. The Jade Emperor initiates a race, promising the first 12 animals who finish they will have a year named after them. The thirteen animals find different ways to cross the river, with a focus on best friends Cat and Rat.

Initially, they work together and climb onto the head of Ox only for Rat to push Cat into the water. Rat’s actions cause Cat to finish the race in thirteenth place. As a result, there is no Year of the Cat and “to this very day, cats have hated rats.” The book includes information about the characters of the Chinese zodiac calendar.
