Ruby's Wish by Shirin Yim
The picture book Ruby’s Wish by Shirin Yim promotes commitment, determination, gender roles and perseverance.
Ruby lives with her grandfather who “did what rich men did in old China: he married many wives.” A tutor teaches his 100 grandchildren but Ruby is the only girl who wishes to continue her education rather than marry.
She writes a poem expressing her frustrations, “Alas, bad luck to be born a girl; worse luck to be/ born into this house where only boys are cared for.” Impressed by her ambition and perseverance her grandfather grants her wish to attend university. Based on the life of Shirin Yim’s grandmother.
