The Colour of Home by Mary Hoffman
The Colour of Home by Mary Hoffman is a great picture book to promote immigration, a sense of belonging, creativity and resilience.
Hassan and his family are forced to move from Somalia to England because of war. His home was so colourful compared to the cold, grey environment he now lives in. He feels lonely and out of place.
Hassan paints of his life in Somalia including his colourful home and the jarring colours of war. He explains the painting to his teacher describing his family’s journey from Mogadishu to Mombasa to a refugee camp and then finally to England. Hassan feels more settled as he makes new friends and begins to appreciate the colours of his new home.
