The Lumberjack’s Beard by Duncan Beedie promotes themes of cause & effect, environment, forgiveness, problem solver and reflective.

Jim Hickory was a lumberjack with “big, burly shoulders and an even bigger bristly beard.” Every day he chops down trees with no thought for the consequences.

When a bird, a porcupine and a beaver lose their homes because of Jim’s actions they demand he makes amends. He lets them live in his enormous beard but “between the bird’s chirping, the porcupine’s prickling and the beaver’s thumping, Jim didn’t get much sleep that night.”

He shaves off his beard, piles it up on his porch so the animals can continue living in it. Jim reflects on his actions and realises the damage he has done to the forest. He sets out to plant saplings and recreate the forest. “Jim’s beard grew back over time. The trees took quite a bit longer… But it was worth the wait.”
