The Night Gardener by Terry Fan is a gentle picture book that promotes creativity, a sense of community, social awareness and appreciation.

“Something was happening on Grimloch Lane. Something good.” William woke to a commotion outside his window. Looking outside he saw a tree had transformed into an owl. “William spent the whole day staring at it in wonder”. The next day there was a topiary cat, followed by a rabbit, a parakeet and an elephant.

One night William spots someone he didn’t recognise… it was the Night Gardener, and he invites William to help. The next day, the “whole town had come out to admire the Night Gardener’s – and William’s – hard work.” The change in seasons erases all evidence of the Night Gardener, but William and the neighbourhood are changed forever.
