The Quiet Place by Sarah Stewart

The Quiet Place by Sarah Stewart is a lovely picture book that reinforces adaptability, belonging, perspectives and wellbeing.

Isabel, her parents and brother emigrated from Mexico to Michigan. Before moving to America, Isabel’s Aunt Lupita taught her English. She practices her language skills by describing her new life in twelve letters to her aunt.

She writes about her new school, seeing snow for the first time, helping her mother cook and her difficulties learning in English. The letters describe how she collects and decorates empty boxes and makes her “quiet place’. This space comforts her and she gradually adjusts to her new life.
