The Story Machine by Tom McLaughlin promotes communication, inquirers, creativity and a growth mindset.

Rummaging through an old box Elliott finds a machine that “didn’t have an ON/OFF button and it didn’t even bleep or buzz!” He sits on it by mistake and realises it made letters and words. “Perhaps it was a story machine.” Elliott is frustrated by the machine as he keeps getting the letters “all jumbled up.” He notices he had made a face with the letters and makes more pictures of giraffes, bees, rockets and robots.

The pictures were big and small, busy and quiet and they all told a story. Because of his enthusiasm for the story machine, it malfunctions. A rather glum Elliott thought that was the end of his pictures and stories, but another look in the box produces some paint. He creates many pieces of new artwork and realises it was him making the stories, not the machine “and he was really rather good at it!”
