We’re All Wonders by R J Palacio

We’re All Wonders by R J Palacio is the picture book version of the award-winning chapter book Wonder. It promotes self-esteem, identity, friendship and open-minded.

Auggie, from Wonder, returns in this picture book. “My mum says I’m unique. She says I’m a wonder!… But some people don’t see that I’m a wonder. All they see is how different I look.” Auggie shares how he likes to do ordinary things, like riding a bike and eating ice cream, he just doesn’t look ordinary. Other children stare and laugh at him. “They even say mean things behind my back. But I can hear them.”

When things get too much, Auggie and his dog Daisy put on their space helmets and travel across the galaxy. Auggie and Daisy take some perspective and observe the Earth from Pluto. “Billions of people. People of all different colours. People who walk and talk differently. People who look different. Like me! The Earth is big enough for all kinds of people.”

Auggie travels home with an open mind that someone will accept him for who he is and “see that they’re wonders too. We’re all wonders!” On his return, he meets a boy who wants to be his friend.
