Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats
Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats is a great picture book to promote perseverance, growth mindset and responsible decision-making.
A young boy called Peter was playing outside and colouring with chalk. He hears the whistling of an older boy, so Peter decides he wants to whistle so he can call his dog, Willie. “Peter tried and tried to whistle, but he couldn’t.”
His attempts come to nothing until his determination pays off and he blows his first whistle. “He blew and blew and blew. Suddenly – out came a real whistle!” Much to his delight, he whistles and his dog Willy came running, and Peter “whistled all the way home.”
