What Are Character Traits?
Character traits are the attitudes and behaviors that shape how children act and interact with others.
Traits like empathy, respect, curiosity, and responsibility help children grow socially and emotionally, not just academically.
Why Use Picture Books to Teach Character Traits?
These books for teaching character traits help students recognize and reflect on their own behavior. They also:
- Build emotional literacy
- Encourage discussion and reflection
- Support social-emotional learning (SEL)
- Link to curriculum goals (e.g. IB Learner Profile, CCSS)
They also give children safe, relatable ways to explore tough topics:
- A story character makes a hard choice → children see fairness in action.
- A nervous child takes a risk → children see courage and self-belief.
- A friend shows kindness → children see empathy and inclusion.
